Shapers

Where Surf Meets Art.

It's a beautiful world! Barlz offers custom surfboards shaped by renowned local shapers from around the world with killer graphics by artists who are carefully curated by Barlz' design team. These boards are meant to be ridden, otherwise, why waste the material? That said, these boards, and all hand sculpted boards are, works of art. We are taking it a step further adding accents of color, design and beauty to what all of our shapers already give us.

Jon Wegener

Jon Wegener was born and bred in SoCal, riding waves and shaping boards since '87. After college in San Diego, Jon headed back to Hermosa Beach, CA to turn his passion into a full-time gig. Jon has had the rad opportunity to work with some legends like Hap Jacobs and Bing Surfboards before starting his own Wegener Surfboards. In 2010, he made his way to Encinitas, where he’s been dialing in the perfect board for every swell.

He loves mixing it up, whether it’s a finless wooden alaia, a classic fiberglass noserider, or a progressive shortboard, he’s all in. His journey with alaias kicked off in 2005 when his brother Tom introduced him to one after a trip to the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. Since then, they’ve been stoked on crafting alaias and paipos, and spreading the word about Paulownia wood, a killer material for surfboards.

Always chasing that perfect blend of surf and sustainability (yep, ASAP - As Sustainable As Possible), Jon is more hyped about the future of surfing than ever before. Jon is amped to ride this new wave of innovation. CLICK HERE to see Jon's Barlz collab boards.

Dennis Jarvis

In 1978 Dennis Jarvis, a young, up and coming professional surfer from the South Bay beaches of Los Angeles, CA started building Spyder surfboards to better suit his own personal needs for a higher performance board to compete on the Professional World Tour.

In 1983 Dennis opened Spyder Surf Shop in Hermosa Beach, CA to meet what had become a steady demand for his Spyder Surfboards. You could find Dennis shaping in the back of the shop, and get a custom board shaped while trying on a new pair of boardshorts in the front of the store. Some of the very best surfers in the world, from recent World Champions to pioneering legends have ridden or continue to ride Spyder Surfboards.

Dennis has a great respect and appreciation for art and design and what it brings to the beauty of his shapes. He himself is a prolific artist, creating graphic compliments to his shapes for decades.

Dennis says, “Get in the water more and enjoy surfing! After all, what are doing here?” CLICK HERE to see Dennis' Barlz collab boards.
